Israel’s parliament has passed a controversial law establishing the death penalty by hanging for certain terrorism offenses. The measure reportedly applies only to Palestinians convicted of carrying out attacks or bombings against Israelis.
Restrictions and detention proceduresUnder the law, those convicted would be held in a designated detention facility. Access would be limited to authorized personnel, and communication with attorneys would take place remotely via video link.
Execution requirementsThe law requires that a sentence be carried out within 90 days of conviction. Four individuals must be present during the execution: the prison warden, a representative of the judiciary, an official observer and a family representative of the condemned person.

Notably, the draft law passed its third and final reading with support from 62 members of the 120-seat Knesset. Opposition lawmakers denounced the measure as shameful and immoral, arguing it conflicts with democratic principles and international law. They said they plan to challenge the law before Israel’s Supreme Court.
