Kubrin once traveled to St. Petersburg, where he met his future wife, a theater actress.

She agreed to marry him on one condition: that he build a new house in Akmola in the style of the northern capital.

He kept his promise, constructing the mansion with elements of St. Petersburg architecture and designing the garden himself.

Some of the trees he planted more than 100 years ago still survive. Over its long life, the house has served many purposes.
