Zakat al-Fitr, a form of charitable giving during the holy month of Ramadan, will amount to 735 tenge ($1.50) this year, according to a decision by the Spiritual Administration of Kazakhstan’s Muslims. The amount is determined based on the cost of two kilograms of flour in the country.

According to a general fatwa, Ramadan will begin Feb. 19. The night of March 16-17 will mark Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power. Eid al-Fitr (known locally as Oraza Ait), the festival marking the end of the fast, will be observed March 20.
Purpose and payment of Zakat al-Fitr
Fitr alms are paid during Ramadan, before the festive prayer on Eid al-Fitr. Its purpose is to help those in need and allow them to celebrate the holiday with dignity.
It is paid by every Muslim who has the means to meet basic needs. Typically, the father or head of household pays on behalf of the entire family, including a spouse, children, and dependent elderly parents.
Ramadan observance and exemptions
Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days according to the lunar calendar. It is a month of fasting, prayer and charity, when believers strive to be more mindful of their words, actions and the people around them. The month concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, the elderly and the sick, young children, and those physically unable to fast — such as travelers or people working in difficult conditions — are exempt from fasting.
