Maldives makes history with lifetime smoking ban
По информации сайта Kursiv.Media, передает Qazaq24.com.
A law banning smoking for anyone born after January 2007 has taken effect in the Maldives, making the island nation the first in the world to implement a «generational ban» on tobacco.
The measure aims to protect public health and create a tobacco-free generation. Under the new rules, anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 2007, is prohibited from purchasing, using or possessing tobacco products. The restriction also applies to tourists visiting the Indian Ocean archipelago of 1,191 coral islands, known for its luxury resorts.
Notably, local retailers are now required to verify customers’ ages. Selling cigarettes to minors carries a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa (about $3,200). Electronic cigarettes and vapes are also completely banned, with violations punishable by a 5,000-rufiyaa fine ($320).
Authorities say the law is part of a broader national strategy to reduce addiction and promote healthy lifestyles.
